10/02/09: GREEN PACKAGING PANEL & LUNCH
We discussed how to make the right decisions when it comes to choosing how to package your products/meals in a green and sustainable way. Southeast Green, Green Plate and the Green Chamber of the South are hosting this lunch and learn panel discussion with industry insiders on how to green your containers for your business.
10/03/09: HOTOber Fest: Earth, Beer, & Music
HOToberFest was organized to promote sustainability and conscious choices that help balance the use of our natural resources, ensuring a better future for everyone. The festival raises funds that are donated to support the efforts of
three local non-profit groups: Trees Atlanta, Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and Dialogue.
education event – Free
The US Green Building Council event is a membership event that happens four to six times a year. Polly Sattler spoke to the USGBC 40 members in attendance and displayed materials. No funds were expended and it took a 1.5 hours.
September 2008– Leadership DeKalb -- Free
Polly Sattler presented to 60 members of the 2009 Leadership DeKalb class at the opening retreat. She showed the Algalita video and challenged class members to help Leadership DeKalb achieve its sustainability goals by helping reduce the use of plastic and to help with recycling efforts. No funds were expended and the talk was 30 minutes.
August – Sept 2008 - Restaurant Focus Groups – Free
GreenPlate hosted two restaurant focus groups to look at the environmental concerns these restaurants have and to see if we could facilitate their being able to make changes in a cost effective means. At the first meeting with showed the Algalita film and asked about recycling options. At the second focus group, we looked at the research the restaurants had already done regarding no petroleum take out alternatives. A group of 15-20 restaurants were invited to participate although any restaurants would have been welcome. The focus groups were 2 hours each and took about 8 hours to coordinate and plan.
September 2008 – Candler Park Fall Fest -- $100 -
The Candler Park Fall Fest is a neighborhood event. GreenPlate had a table to educate attendees. The goal was to outreach to the community and to sign up readers for the website and newsletter. The fee to participate was $100. Friday set up took 1.5 hours and manning the booth was done my Polly Sattler and two volunteers. It was a 16 hour weekend.
March 2009 –
Event at Radial Café – Free – GreenPlate invited GreemPlate newsletter recepients out to see the Algalita film about plastics in the ocean. There was no fee and Montine and Polly spoke to audience members. It was a 2 hour event with about 3 hours of practice and set up time.
April 7-8 2009 GA AL Partnership for Sustainability
Hosted by Ft. Benning to encourage sustainability at the base and in Colmbus.– Free – GreenPlate had a table at the conference. The goal was to promote the better use of plastics and increase awareness of the environmental and health issues related to disposable plastic. It was a 2-day event.
April 18 2009 Earth Day Kids Fest hosted by Captain Planet–
Montine Blank represented GreenPlate. It was an event sponsored by Captain Planet with a focus on kids. The event was a four hour event with 4 hours of set up, prep and travel time.
April 18th and 19th 2009 SweetWater Fest --$125.00
The event was a community event that hosted music, local vendors and promoted environmental awareness. It took place near a MARTA station and provided a bicycle valet to encourage the use of "green" transportation.– GreenPlate had a table to educate attendees and sign up readers for the newsletters and wesbite. Set up was on Friday for 1.5 hours. The event was two days. Montine Blank, Polly Sattler and Jennifer Bennett manned the table. There were also 2 other volunteers for a total of 6 hours of non GreenPlate volunteers.
April 25th and 26th 2009 Inman Park Festival
This event is a neighborhood event with arts and crafts, performances and a parade. GreenPlate had a table to educate attendees and sign up readers for the newsletters and wesbite. The cost was $250 and the table was manned by Montine Blank, Jennifer Bennett and a volunteer. Set up was Friday for 1.5 hours and 16 hours for Sat and Sunday. Prep time was 4 hours.
April 30th 2009 US EPA Exp --$10
This is a green fair hosted by the US EPA for federal employees at the Federal Center. The event was 4 hours with 2 hours of prep and set up.
May 2nd 2009 – Decatur GreenFest -- $100
This event was hosted by the Dogwood Alliance in the Decatur Square to raise awareness about environmental groups and non profit programs in the Decatur area. GreenPlate had a table to sign up readers for the newsletters and website. Jennifer Bennett tabled for the day. It was rained out so she was there 3 hours. Prep, travel and set up were all 3 hours.
May 10th 2009 Sweet Auburn Festival $250 –
A traditionally African American event in the Sweet Auburn District of Atlanta. The table was manned for 6 hours on Friday and 8 on Saturday. We did not participate on Sunday. Set up time and prep were 3 hours.
May 16th 2009 Go Green Get Rewards is a volunteer rewards program.
The event was hosted at Underground Atlanta. It was free. The goal of the event was to raise awareness about organizations for people to volunteer with environmental non profit organizations.
June 6th 2009 Va Highlands Summerfest
Celebrates the beginning of summer with arts, great food, live musical performances and much more. The festival takes place along Virginia Avenue, in the heart of historic Virginia-Highland. It was free because we were on a sidewalk. The table was manned by Montine Blank, Polly Sattler, and Jennifer Bennett on Saturday and Sunday for 16 hours.
6/16: World Oceans Day
June 7th 2009 Evolver Fest
Atlanta presents the first annual EvolverFest, a festival bringing together our city’s most visionary Evolutionaries for a day of enlightening ideas and conscious celebration. Montine Blank spoke on the issues related to plastics. It cost GreenPlate -- $50
June 13th 2009 – Castleberry Community Clean up
GreenCell helped to host the clean up. Montine Blank educated volunteers on materials that could be recycled and arranged for the City of Atlanta to pick up recycled products.
June 19th 2009 Leadership DeKalb presentation – Free Follow up to Fall presentation. What had people learned. How had they changed their plastic use.
June 25-26 2009 Go Green Expo -- $250
Greenplate had a table to sign up readers for the newsletters and wesbite. Presented Belle Plastique the mannequin wearing 500 plastic bags – the average number of bags an American family uses each year.
July 14, 2009 – Cabbagetown neighborhood association meeting.
Montine Blank and Polly Sattler made a presentation showing the Algalita film and discussed the impact of plastic in Atlanta. We introduced the idea of GreenCell community clean ups.
