YES, ATL, OUR CITY DOES RECYCLE...

On August 6th, GreenPlate Co-founder Montine Blank and volunteer extraordinaire Jennifer Bennett, along with about 20 other industry people, toured the SP Recycling Plant, and Strategic Materials. Strategic Materials is located in College Park and is one of the country's largest glass recyclers. Montine was impressed with their state of the art processing system that used jet engines and lasers to process the glass.

The group also got to see where the City of Atlanta's recycling gets processed at the SP Recycling plant in Forest Park. On average SP handles 200 tons of materials every day. After seeing the piles and piles of collected materials, Jennifer stated, "It was a a huge reality check for me. I have started on the right path with recycling but now I really understand that reducing packaging and my overall consumption is really where I can make a bigger impact".

PLASTIC ECO-HERO:RAINFOREST-SAVING GRACE FORD

Grace Ford is 6 and she's making a difference. Grace's imagination and concern were ignited when she learned

about rainforest destruction in the Amazon in her class at the Galloway School. So she started her "Save the Rain Forest" piggy bank to collect money to send to Earth's Birthday Project. Through Galloway's eff

orts, 22 acres of rainforest were preserved.

Grace recognizes how important it is to make a difference locally. She decided that she should start taking "nature walks" to pick up trash so as she takes walks around Chastain Park . She picks up the trash and puts in her little sisters stroller until she comes to a trash can. Grace also decided to do her part by taking her own water bottle with when she is on the go instead of plastic ones that get thrown away. If everyone made a commitment to take some action like Grace, we'd be making a big impact on our environment.
